THE UNCLE SAM MOVIE COLLECTION: VOL. 4-6
Certainly the military flavour is central to the films, but political shorts and even post-war subjects serve to make the series more rounded. At any rate, the same remarkable balance between style, content and effectiveness is as evident in Volumes 4-6 as they were in Volumes 1-3. As in the first trilogy, each volume contains seven films, for a total of 21.
THE DEVIL STRIKES AT NIGHT
For films fans, particularly of classic films, there are few greater pleasures than discovering a ‘new’ film. THE DEVIL STRIKES AT NIGHT is a film about a serial killer during the last few years of World War II.
THE MAGIC FACE
This seldom-seen film is sometimes encapsulated in reviews by the phrase ‘Adler rises above the material’. That is an understatement. The great, underrated actor Luther Adler positively transcends the restrictions of this low-budget ‘what if’ tale about a persecuted actor in Nazi Germany who, through his gift for impersonation, is able to transform himself into different people, including, eventually, Hitler himself.
SHARKS AND LITTLE FISH
Those of you who love DAS BOOT will love this film. During WWII, three young German sea cadets, fresh from training, arrive for their first tour of duty on the ‘Albatross’, a mine sweeper.
ABOVE US THE WAVES
While this is not a great film, it is highly watchable, with the midget submarines being an interesting variation on the blow-up-the-German-battleship story and a welcome and unique addition to the submarine movie genre.
NINE MEN
NINE MEN is a taut little war feature made during World War II which shares the predicament of nine 8th Army soldiers stranded in the North African desert and caught behind enemy lines.
WARPATH
Here is a tough, little-known Western starring a rather unlikely hero, Edmond O’Brien, as a man bent on tracking down the two remaining men who were responsible for shooting his fiancée.
SUGARFOOT
Scott plays a ‘sugarfoot’ or tenderfoot, that is, one who is new to the ways of the west. He manages, in true B Western form, to overcome this obstacle of inexperience to win the girl and beat the bad guys.
ZULU WARS
This 3-part series tracing the history of the Zulu people during their most turbulent and formative years is exceptional for its epic quality, covering the rise and fall of King Shaka up to the conclusion of the Anglo-Zulu war.
THE BRIGAND OF KANDAHAR
This production is a little off the beaten track in terms of the type of film Hammer Studios normally produced. It’s not a horror film or even a thriller. Rather it’s an adventure story about British Imperialism in the Northwest Frontier of India in the 19th-Century.
Blast From the Past! Recovered from the darkest recesses of Cyberspace! The Lost Video Risks of Jonathan Hickman! Yes folks, nearly 20 Video Risks written by Jonathan Hickman before he became too big to write mere reviews, Below are links to a few of the recently recovered gems from way back when!
WHERE THE BUFFALO ROAM
Warning, on the whole this film may receive a bomb rating from most critics or be dropped completely from review lists or books. While this film is a must for Hunter S. Thompson fans, it may be really confusing to those not acquainted with his work or legend.
SHALLOW GRAVE
"Shallow Grave" is a solid example of neo-thriller-noir, an entertaining, yet, sometimes, distasteful film from the talented director (Danny Boyle) of the brilliant but difficult "Trainspotting."
RORKE'S DRIFT/THE WAR AGAINST THE ZULUS
While they will be of particular interest to those of you with an existing fascination for the Zulu War of 1879, these documentaries will attract new fans as well. They are different enough that you will want to have both of them in your collection, though they do cover much of the same ground.
