Upon its original release, "The Stepford Wives" created a sensation of debate concerning the roles of
men and women in our society. Adapted from Ira Levin's best selling sci/fi novel, "The Stepford Wives"
is as powerful and suspenseful today as it was 25 years ago.
Katherine Ross plays Joanna. She is a housewife/up and coming professional photographer. She leaves New
York City to relocate with her egghead husband (Peter Masterson) to Stepford, Connecticut. Stepford is a
high tech, up scale town of finely manicured lawns and very obedient women. Joanna begins to suspect that
something is wrong. Turns out she is right. For the one or two folks who haven't seen this classic, I'll
go no further into the plot.
The acting, writing and direction are all excellent. Paula Prentiss delivers one of her great flaky
performances. Patrick O'Neal stands out in a masterfully evil performance which foreshadows his amoral
cop in the under rated "Q & A." Look quick for Mary Stuart Masterson, daughter of Peter Masterson
in her screen debut.
Anchor Bay pulled out all the stops on this one. The picture and sound are excellent. The extras
are great. Well worth the price of admission.
Picture Quality: 10/10
Anchor Bay made the transfer from a restored print. The picture quality is excellent. Entertainment
Weekly said it best, and I really can't improve on their quote. The picture is as
"shiny as a Stepford Kitchen floor."
Sound Quality: 10/10
There is excellent music and ambient sounds which push the viewer to the edge of their seat. Even the
silence is rich!
Menu: 8/10
Nothing real inventive, but then again, the movie doesn't really call for a high tech menu ala "Aliens."
The menu is classy, and easy to navigate.
Extra Features: 10/10
I especially enjoyed the interview with the cast and crew. The behind the scenes intrigue between Peter
Masterson, William Goldman and director Bryan Forbes as told by Mr. Masterson is worth the price alone.
The Final Word:
This movie is one of my favorites and so I may rate it higher than some wife beating Alabama trailer trash.
Thanks Anchor Bay for making "The Stepford Wives" available
in such pristine quality. A must have for the DVD library.
