Walt Disney's "The Rescuers" pales in comparison with its dazzling sequel "The Rescuers Down Under." I enjoyed the movie when I took my oldest daughter to see it years ago during a theatrical re-release. This time around, the movie left me flat. It just doesn't hold up as well as some other vintage Disney films. The DVD is fine and includes a number of good extras, bu8t the movie itself is a bit slow and quaint.
"The Rescuers" introduces Bernard (Bob Newhart) and Miss Bianca (Eva Gabor) of the Rescue Aid Society. Madame Medusa (Geraldine Page)has kidnapped poor little ragamuffin Penny. Penny is needed for Madame Medusa's plan to steal the world's largest diamond. Penny throws a bottle with a message off of the old steamship on which she is being held. The bottle is found and Bernard and Miss Bianca are on their way to save the day. The albatross Orville (Jim Jordon: John Candy in the sequel) flies the pair of brave mice to the swamps of Louisiana to rescue Penny. The pair braves all forms of danger including Madame Medusa's pet alligators to save the child. "The Rescuers" features the additional vocal talents of many familiar actors of the 60s and 70s including Joe Flynn, Pat Butram and George Lindsey.
"The Rescuers" is not a bad film, it’s just that Disney has produced so many better movies since this was released in 1977. Even when compared to the classics of yore (Snow White, Dumbo, Cinderella), "The Rescuers" was only fair.
OK movie. Good picture, sound and extras.
Picture Quality: 10/10
The film has been restored. No artifacts or pixilation noticed. Great delineation of colors. Rich, well-saturated colors. Sharp picture all around.
Sound Quality: 10/10
The 5.1 soundtrack is also quite good. The film is slow at times, but once Bernard and Miss Bianca tangle with Madame Medusa, the movie makes great use of all five channels.
Easter Eggs:
No Easter Eggs found during review.
Extra Features: 7/10
The extras run hot and cold. The "Water Birds Disney True-Life Adventure" is a 25-minute documentary about different types of birds which inhabit wetlands. It is education and entertaining.
"Three Blind Musketeers" is a Disney Silly Symphony. The cartoon was my favorite part of the disk. Great animation and a funny story.
The Rescuers Scrapbook is a gallery of artwork from the movie. The "Ultimate Case Set-Top Detective Game" will not challenge anyone old enough to understand the directions. You basically use your remote control to find hidden objects from a group of pictures. "Under the Hat Villains" is a 2-minute montage of classic Disney villains, It serves no real purpose.
There is a Sing Along for the kids, but the song, "Someone's Waiting For You" is not particularly memorable. The DVD also includes Sneak Peeks for several other Disney releases.
The Final Word:
Middle of the road Disney. Maybe worth arent.
