Review
A cool mix of the vampire and 80s teen-flick genres, "The Lost Boys" tells the story of a teen who sees the seductive side to vampirism while trying to hold on to his humanity at the same time. At times predictable, "The Lost Boys" none the less adds some hip twists to the traditional vampire lore to create a highly entertaining horror romp.

Lucy Emerson (Diane Wiest) discovered what a cad her husband was and divorced him. The movie opens with her moving to the coastal California town of Santa Carla with her two sons. She plans on staying with her father, "Grandpa" (Barnard Hughes) till she can get on her feet. Her oldest son, Michael (Jason Patric) finds himself drawn to the sexy beach chick, Star (Jami Gertz). Funny he only sees her at night. The youngest son, Sam (Cory Haim) just worries about making new friends. Sam feels alienated in this new community of old hippies and young flakes. He’s still in a Texas frame of mind. He runs into two kids his age at a comic book store. The kids, Edgar and Allan Frog (Cory Feldman and Jamison Newlander) dress up like a junior G.I. Joes and keeps talking about vampires. Sam thinks they are nuts.

As Michael falls more and more under the sprell of star, he discovers that she runs with a unsavory crowd. This gang of four is lead by David (Keifer Sutherland). Looking like rejects from an 80s hair band, David and his pals taunt Michael to the point he accepts their challenges. He ends up communing with them by drinking bottled blood. The things a guy will do to get laid. Will Michael go over to the dark side? Will Sam ever listen to the nutcases at the comic book store and start whittling stakes for vampire hunts. Will Lucy ever find love again? Will we get to see Jamie Gertz topless? For the answers to these and other great mysteries of the universe get "The Lost Boys."

The Disc
Popular movie, fair picture and good sound. No extras to speak of. Still a better format than VHS.

Picture Quality: 6/10
Artifacts galore. Problems with the color white. I still like it better than VHS.

Sound Quality: 10/10
The 5.1 sound is great during the final battle with the vampire gang. The soundtrack sounds good too.

Menu: 7/10
Gets the job done. Not a lot of creative effort put into the design.

Extra Features: 4/10
The trailer is good. I love Cory Haim's line "Michael, you're a blood sucking freak, wait til mom finds out!" (or words to that effect.) Production notes are a joke.

The Final Word:
A staple of anyone’s 80s film library. Warner Brothers could have put a lot more effort into this DVD and made more money. Who hires these studio executives anyway?
