To read Mac Verstandig's excellent review of this great film CLICK HERE. I love this one.
This is the second time I've reviewed a DVD of the film "Snatch." The reason for reviewing this new version is to tell you about the new "Superbit" technology Columbia Tristar is using to produce DVDs.
"Superbit" is a high bit rate digital transfer. More surface space is used to encode movies at nearly double the normal DVD bit rate. The result is a picture of noticeably superior resolution than anything that you have seen on DVD before. Tom Morton of "Stereophile Guide to Home Theater" said it best: "True high-definition on DVD is still in the future, but Superbit is a tantalizing and rewarding step in the right direction."
Columbia Tristar is re-releasing older titles with this new technology. You may want to throw out the old and bring in the new. Superbit is amazing!
Great movie presented in superior Superbit format. Great picture, sound and extras.
Picture Quality: 10/10
With the advent of the new Superbit technology, I can't see giving a "10" rating to any DVD not released in the new format. I can't describe the incredible improvement in picture resolution, clarity and sharpness. My daughter walked in the room as I was watching the DVD and asked "who cleaned off the TV screen?" In one scene, Benicio Del Toro is getting into the back of his van. His long, dark hair is sticking out from under a hat. This would normally be a scene, which would present major delineation problems. Not with Superbit. The various degrees of darkness are superbly defined. It is a small detail, but it illustrates how great the new technology is. In another scene, Dennis Farina's character gets into a car during the daytime. The picture almost looks three-dimensional. If you have a large screen TV, you might swear you were in the theater. Superbit isn't a gimmick, Superbit is an evolutionary revolution in DVD technology.
Sound Quality: 10/10
The improvements to the audio portion created by Superbit technology are also spectacular. The DTS was superior to the 5.1, but both were superior to anything I've ever heard on a normal DVD. No distortion, crisp, clear sound. "Snatch" is a loud movie. There is a lot of music, talking, gunfire etc... Excellent use of the surround sound features. The boxing matches are particular standouts. The sound is so good that you can almost understand what Brad Pitt is saying!
Menu: 10/10
Nice interactive menu design. Great use of images and sound from the movie.
The Easter Eggs are located on the main menu of Disc 2. They are located on the image of "Bullet Tooth" Tony.
Extra Features: 9/10
My only complaint about this DVD is that the director/producer commentary track, which appeared on the "Special Edition" DVD is nowhere to be found. Otherwise, the extras are great.
The "Making Of" featurette is the same found on the "Special Edition" it is a funny interview with Guy Ritchie by actor Jason Statham. Very funny! The "Deleted Scenes" are also the same ones found on the "Special Edition" DVD. The director/producer commentary track is available for the deleted scenes. Another feature from the "Special Edition" found here are the three storyboard to film comparisons.
The video photo gallery is new. The Easter Eggs are very funny. The first Egg has a screen, which asks if you are easily offended. If you push no, a screen appears which says "Sit back and enjoy some of the best cussing and violence to be found in an English movie." What follows is a three-minute montage of rude, crude humor. If you choose the "yes" option, you see the same montage with the curse words bleeped out. The second Easter Egg is a montage of memorable quotes from the film.
The Final Word:
Superbit technology is the newest step toward high definition DVD. You may want to replace some of you favorite DVDs with this new format. I know I'm going to. "Snatch" is a great one to start with!
