The movie's ending ruined any positive feelings I may have had before the final reel. The special effects and make up
are excellent. There are some very good performances, but the ending sunk this ship for me. To read EI's archived
review from the theatrical run click here.
This is an incredible DVD from a technical point of view. Unfortunately all the glitter surrounds what is a very bad movie. From a DVD view-point, this one has more than just about any other DVD I've seen. I guess FOX had to put out a monster DVD for this one to make back their money.
Great picture and sound. Unbelievable extras. Lousy movie!
Picture Quality: 9/10
I would have given the picture a "10" if not for a couple of scenes in which you could tell there was some blue screen effects done. It was most noticeable during the scene in which General Thade kills the two apes who found the submerged spaceship. Other than this the picture quality is outstanding.
Sound Quality: 10/10
I'd give it an "11" but that would be ripping off the "Spinal Tap" gag! Outstanding sound. The best I've heard on a DVD.
Menu: 8/10
The menu is amazing. I dropped the rating to an "8" because it is a little to complex. There are so many extras on these two disks that the menu has to be complex. It takes a while to get the hang of navigating this monster. Once you get the hang of it, it's smooth sailing. Great design and use of music. Outstanding animation.
Extra Features: 10/10
Where to start?
The enhanced viewing mode is great for those who are into all the behind the scenes material. There is a screen within a screen picture which shows you the film being made as you watch the movie. An icon appears now and then which allows you to jump to a featurette about that particular scene or topic.
The screen tests are cool. There are four screens showing simultaneously. You can toggle the audio back and forth from all four screens.
The extended scenes are interesting. It gives you some insight into the editing and directing process when you compare the extended scenes with the final cut.
The "Rule the Planet Remix" video is great. I usually am not impressed with this type of video, but this one rocks.
The documentaries are hit or miss. I guess you level of enjoyment will depend on your interest in the subject. I enjoyed the make-up feature, but wasn't enthralled by the costume or score featurettes.
I didn't care enough about the movie to check out the DVD-ROM features. Sorry!
The Final Word:
Fans will be happy. I couldn't get past the ending. Still, the DVD is amazing for it's DVDness rather than the movie it chronicles.
