New DVD Reviews:

Chocolate [Blu-ray] (2008) (R)
For anyone who has seen the trailer for "Chocolate" on youtube, the footage makes the movie a must see. In it, star Jeeja is shown kicking, punching and flying through the air with impossible ease, performing literally death defying stunts, and as the trailer points out, all without the use of wires or stunt doubles. It's a reference to asian action superstars like Jackie Chan, Michele Yeoh and Thailand's Tony Jaa, all of whom perform their own stunts. But for all the promise the film's intriguing trailer hints at, "Chocolate" is a flawed action pic featuring painful dramatic sequences, some decent fight scenes, and a handful of spectacular stunts that almost make the rest of the movie worth wading through. Almost.

High School Musical 3: Senior Year: Extended Edition (2008) (G)
I must admit that my love of horror movies and the films of Sam Peckinpah do not prevent me from enjoying the "High School Musical" movies. I've spent many enjoyable hours watching these movies with my youngest daughter Lauren. Part of the enjoyment is time spent with my little girl. But I have to admit that the movies themselves are filled with talented actors, fun songs and great dance numbers. I always enjoyed the Andy Hardy films with their 'Hey gang, lets put on a show!' enthusiasm. The "HSM" series captured this innocent quality from a the Golden Age of Hollywood.

60s, The: Megaset (2009) (NR)
A&E and the History Channel’s new Megaset “The 60s” is a hit and miss collection. For baby boomers who want to reminisce or their kids who want to know why their parents are the way they are, “The 60s” provides an overview of the most turbulent decade of the past century. The megaset covers most of the touchstone events of the 1960s. The 14-disc set contains nearly 29 hours of both excellent and mediocre viewing. There are some glaring omissions here in that the music and pop culture of the decade gets little or no mention.

Choke (2008) (R)
Not many writers in recent memory have benefitted from cinematic adaptations of their work as much as Chuck Palahniuk. Though still largely perceived as a cult author, the author’s visibility grew far into the mainstream after 1999’s "Fight Club" forged its place as one of the more divisive, love it or hate it movies of the past 10 years. And this is precisely why "Choke," based on Palahniuk's fourth novel, is being marketed, above all else, as the new film "from the author of Fight Club." "Choke" also marks the feature film directorial debut for familiar character actor Clark Gregg ("Iron Man," "In Good Company"), who chose a daunting task in attempting to bring the source material to the screen. But as far as daunting tasks go, this one at least became manageable the moment he cast Sam Rockwell in the lead role. The actor's effortless mix of charm, humor and vulnerability is mostly able to carry the movie when Gregg's grasp of the tone slips, which it does too frequently for the film to really succeed.

Friday the 13th: Part 3 3D Edition (1982) (R)
It’s spine-tingling horror in a whole new dimension as Friday the 13th Part 3-3D: Deluxe Edition comes to DVD! A carefree summer becomes a deadly nightmare for another group of naďve counselors who choose to ignore Camp Crystal Lake’s gruesome legacy. They find themselves in a bloody game of cat-and-mouse with the maniacal Jason who stalks their every move…and ruthlessly kills them off one-by-one.

Friday the 13th: Uncut Deluxe Edition (1980) (R)
RIP into a chilling new UNCUT DELUXE EDITION of Friday the 13th. With newly extended unrated scenes and insightful special features, plunge deeper into the film that spawned 10 sequels and the genre’s unstoppable bad guy, Jason Vorhees. When a new owner and several young counselors gather to re-open Camp Crystal Lake, where a young boy drowned and several vicious unsolved murders occurred years earlier, they ignore the local’s warnings that the place has a “death curse”…and one by one they find out just how unlucky Friday the 13th can be as they are stalked by a violent killer.

Red Mist (2008) (R)
After making five drams and comedies, Irish director Paddy Breathnach has made his mark as an up-and-coming horror movie director with "Shrooms" and now "Red Mist" (AKA Freak Dog). "While I prefer his earlier "Shrooms," Red Mist" is a badass little horror movie that delivers shocks, gore and some very cool ideas to move the plot along.

Body of Lies (2008) (R)
Almost a year after Ridley Scott’s “American Gangster” opened to critical and commercial acclaim (grossing more than $130 million domestically), the prolific, 70-year-old British filmmaker returns with “Body of Lies.” It’s a gripping, compelling, action-packed espionage thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat, even if the super-serious storyline loses some of its credibility with a Hollywood ending that’s a little too old-fashioned for its own good.

HISTORYâ„¢ delivers two captivating and timely specials about the economic meltdown ON ONE DVD THAT WONDERS WHETHER ANYONE IS SAFE FROM FINANCIAL PERIL

The 2008 collapse of the American economy wreaked havoc on the American people. While the stock market imploded before them, some investors were devastated by a far more trusted source. See the personal chaos brought onto individual investors by Bernie Madoff, a popular and trusted investor from middle-class Queens, New York – and alleged Ponzi schemer – as experts dissect his $65 billion scam, from its humble beginnings to its stunning downfall, in RIPPED OFF: MADOFF AND THE SCAMMING OF AMERICA . With the help of expert commentary and firsthand accounts from Madoff’s victims, HISTORY™ compares and contrasts this most recent fraud with other Ponzi schemes throughout history, while exploring the economic and historical climates in which they appeared.

Then, as the United States attempts to rebound from economic meltdown, comparisons to the Great Depression are unavoidable. Is history repeating itself? CRASH: THE NEXT GREAT DEPRESSION? looks at the current financial crisis in the U.S. and compares and contrasts it with what led up to the Great Depression, the 1929 stock market crash, its immediate aftermath and the efforts that helped the country break free from the Depression. Will today’s crash turn into tomorrow’s depression? And is anyone safe from the economic pitfalls of such a vulnerable time?

WHAT IF LIFE ON EARTH BEGAN IN OUTER SPACE?

Is it possible that intelligent life forms visited Earth thousands of years ago, bringing with them technology that drastically affected the course of history and man’s own development? Find out for yourself in ANCIENT ALIENS , a top-rated HISTORY™ special that explores evidence of super-human influences on anc ient man and embarks on a round-the-world search for answers.

Presented in the 1968 bestselling book Chariots of the Gods by Erich von Daniken, the theory of “ancient aliens” rocked people’s beliefs in mankind’s progress. Ancient cave drawings of strange creatures, remains of landing strips in Peru, and Indian texts that describe the “flying machines of the gods” were just a few of the odd archaeological artifacts cited by von Daniken as proof that ancient astronauts were well known to our ancestors.

Produced with the exclusive cooperation of von Daniken himself, ANCIENT ALIENS launches all-new expeditions to seek out and evaluate this evidence, with a concentration on the latest discoveries of the last 30 years, including unusual DNA findings on man’s evolution and newly decoded artifacts from Egypt to Syria to South America. It is a balanced investigation into a theory some believe cannot be true, but many agree cannot be ignored.

SHADOWHEART
He came for revenge. He found redemption…

Anchor Bay Entertainment is locked and loaded with a new Western classic

SHADOWHEART

“The best Western since Tombstone!” -- Peter Sherayko, Western Historian

The Old West has never been more wild than in Shadowheart, a double-barreled epic about revenge, redemption and the man the Navajo called “Shadowheart.” This gritty, old-style Western will make its DVD debut from Anchor Bay Entertainment on August 4, 2009. Pre-book is July 2, 2009, and SRP is $26.97.

As a young boy, he saw his preacher father murdered in cold blood. As a soldier, he witnessed first-hand the atrocities of the Civil War. Now, bounty hunter James Conners (Justin Ament, Harvest of Fear, The Path of Evil) has returned to the town of Legend, New Mexico, to marry the beautiful girl (Marnie Alton, “Exes and Ohs”) he left behind and to bring to justice the psychotic land baron (Angus Macfadyen, Saw III - V, the Oscar®-winning Braveheart) who destroyed his childhood.

But when Conners is ambushed and left for dead, he discovers a Native American world where justice has no name and vengeance rides in the shadows...

Loaded with action and excitement, Shadowheart rides high in the saddle alongside such modern-day masterworks as Unforgiven, Dances With Wolves, Appaloosa and 3:10 to Yuma. A&E June DVD Releases
The true story behind the blockbuster movie Defiance

NOTE: THE RECENT DATE CHANGE TO 5/19 WAS INCORRECT. THE CORRECT NEW RELEASE DATE FOR THE BIELSKI BROTHERS IS JUNE 2, DAY-AND-DATE WITH DEFIANCE

During the darkest hours of World War II, three Russian bothers achieved the impossible: they transformed persecution and violence into an incredible tale of affirmation and survival. Timed to release day-and-date with the DVD release of the holiday blockbuster movie Defiance, starring Daniel Craig (Casino Royale) and Liev Schreiber (The Manchurian Candidate), THE BIELSKI BROTHERS reveals one of history’s most extraordinary stories of survival.

Living in the Soviet Republic of Belorussia, Tuvia, Asael, and Zus Bielski fled to the woods to escape the Nazis. There they built an elaborate village for rescued Jews. The forest haven included a bakery, communal bath, synagogue, and even a theater company. Although they mounted guerrilla attacks against the enemy, their priority was saving their people. Tuvia often declared he would “rather save one old Jewish woman than kill ten Nazis.” The Bielskis saved 1,200 men, women, and children -- easily the largest rescue of Jews by Jews during World War II -- but until now their story has gone largely untold. Including interviews with Bielski Brigade survivors in the United States, Israel, and Great Britain , HISTORY™ recognizes three of the greatest heroes of the Holocaust.

E1 June Music DVD Releases

THIS JUNE, E1 ENTERTAINMENT DELIVERS THE ENERGETIC PROG ROCK JAM BAND UMPHREY’S McGEE TO LIVING ROOMS ACROSS THE COUNTRY!

Legendary on the jam band circuit, Chicago-based Umphrey’s McGee has perfected the art of progressive improvisation. With swirling guitar textures, multi-faceted arrangements and their trademark blend of power and finesse, the sextet brings jamming to a new level. During the summer of 2007, the band stopped by WTTN studios in Chicago to record a special performance for the award-winning PBS music series Soundstage. On June 2, E1 Entertainment will present fans with this entire 13 song set on DVD, including the six songs not included in the PBS broadcast which aired for the first time in February. UMPHREY’S McGEE - LIVE features over two hours of dazzling musicianship presented in High Definition and 5.1 Surround Sound, plus bonus footage of songs from the new studio album Cradlesong.

After 12 years together, Umphrey’s McGee continues to gain fans and notoriety, having become one of the premier acts on the touring circuit. With the January release of the band’s fifth studio album Mantis, Umphrey’s McGee attained their highest Billboard album chart position yet. “Made to Measure” and “Wizard Burial Ground” from Mantis are included as bonus tracks on UMPHREY’S McGEE - LIVE, this recent footage recorded in December ’08. The 13 song Soundstage set is comprised of a wide selection of fan favorites; from “Out of Order” off the One Fat Sucka album and “Walletsworth” from Anchor Drops, to “Believe the Lie” and “Ocean Billy” off Safety in Numbers and “Words,” “Higgins,” and “Alex’s House” from The Bottom Half.

Umphrey’s McGee consists of Brendan Bayliss (guitar, vocals), Jake Cinninger (guitar, synthesizers, vocals), Joel Cummins (keyboards, vocals), Andy Farag (percussion), Kris Myers (drums, vocals), and Ryan Stasik (bass). Founded in 1997 in the shadows of the Golden Dome of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana, Umphrey’s McGee soon made Chicago home base, and set their sights on becoming one of the premier live acts in today’s touring circuit. Over the course of the last ten years, the band has headlined festivals such as Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza, and continues to sell out shows in the nation’s premier venues coast to coast. They have toured Europe multiple times and performed at Japan’s Fuji Rock Festival in 2006. As their sound evolves with every passing show, their live concerts – over 100 per year - continue to be in high demand by their hungry fan base.

MULTI-GRAMMY WINNING ARTIST ROB THOMAS SOARS TO NEW HEIGHTS WITH A NEW LIVE PERFORMANCE DVD FROM E1 ENTERTAINMENT

The Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado, a legendary venue previously graced by rock luminaries from The Beatles to U2, provides the awe-inspiring backdrop for multi-Grammy® winning artist Rob Thomas. Recorded in High-Definition and 5.1 Surround Sound for the acclaimed PBS music series Soundstage, the complete 18 song set will debut on DVD as ROB THOMAS: LIVE FROM RED ROCKS from E1 Entertainment. Featuring seven songs not seen on the original 2007 television broadcast, plus a special acoustic arrangement of “Smooth”, a cover of the David Bowie classic “Let’s Dance” and a music video for “Streetcorner Symphony,” ROB THOMAS: LIVE FROM RED ROCKS arrives in-stores June 30 for $19.99 SRP, released simultaneously with Thomas’ new solo album, Cradle Song.

Thomas’ first solo album Something To Be debuted at #1 on the Billboard album chart and sold over 3 million copies, while break-out single “Lonely No More” raced up the singles charts. In June 2006, Rob Thomas reached a new peak (literally and figuratively) when his Something To Be tour made a stop at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre in the foothills of the Colorado Rocky Mountains. The setting proved an idyllic backdrop for Thomas’ set, which touches upon Matchbox Twenty hits along with his solo work. The Matchbox Twenty classic, “3 a.m.” is anthemic alongside other favorites including “Bent.” “Smooth” lives up to its name and his solo work also shines like the poignant “This is How a Heart Breaks,” and the funky “Something to Be.”

As one of the most popular voices to emerge in the late-‘90s, Rob Thomas, with his band Matchbox Twenty, dominated the charts and the radio. Marrying ‘70s-styled rock with pop hooks that made a lasting impression, Thomas served as principal songwriter for the group, and his songwriting chops earned him three Grammy® nods in 2000 when he co-wrote the massive hit, “Smooth,” for Carlos Santana’s Supernatural.

"A high-adrenaline thriller...as exciting as a

trip to the fun house"

-- The New York Times

KOCH LORBER FILMS PRESENTS AN, ACCLAIMED, CHILLING NEW DRAMA FROM OLE BORNEDAL, THE DIRECTOR OF THE CULT CLASSIC, NIGHTWATCH

A man’s everyday life of quiet despair is thrown into turmoil from which he cannot escape in Ole Bornedal’s acclaimed, dark thriller JUST ANOTHER LOVE STORY, arriving on DVD fresh from its U.S. theatrical release. Called by Film Comment “immaculately conceived and thoroughly riveting,” the Danish film, praised at festivals and art house cinemas the world over, will be released on May 12 by KOCH Lorber Films.

Just Another Love Story is far from a typical love story, as evidenced by the protagonist Jonas (Anders W. Berthelsen, The Weight of Water, Island of Lost Souls), a crime scene photographer whose subjects are corpses – a fitting occupation for a man who leads a deadening suburban existence with his wife (Charlotte Fich) and family. But when a car accident he witnesses brings the possibility of change, Jonas takes a special interest in the victim, Julia (Rebecka Hemse) and visits the comatose young woman at the hospital. When mistaken by Julia’s family for her boyfriend Sebastian -- whom they’ve never met -- Jonas readily steps into the role and helps to nurse the amnesia-afflicted Julia back to health, falling in love in the process. However, what had been a light-hearted tale of mistaken identity turns deadly serious when the real Sebastian (Nikolaj Lie Kaas) shows up, Julia begins to remember and hard questions start being asked.

Just Another Love Story had an acclaimed 2009 U.S. theatrical release: The New York Observer praised its “stunning and often surprising visuals that you’ll remember long after the movie is over” and Time Out New York said it “maintains just the right quotient of queasiness.”
