Wait for what?
by Stephen Wong
I'm not sure if there's a genre for films about absolutely nothing, that try to prove absolutely
nothing, and have you leaving the theater with absolutely nothing and still enjoying it. If there were,
however, Can't Hardly Wait would be at the top of the class.
Preston (Ethan Embry), a bashfully quiet nice guy, is heads over heels for Amanda (Jennifer Love
Hewitt). Amanda, the misunderstood prom queen, has just been dumped by her Tom Cruise
look-a-like jock boyfriend Mike (Peter Facinelli) who she's been dating for four years. It's
graduation night, which means mom and dad aren't home, and that for a few hours a bunch of just
turned ex-high school kids get to show the world what sex, drugs, and rock n' roll are all about.
Preston's determined to let Amanda know how he feels about her. Amanda's determined to show
people that there's more to her than just blatant cleavage shots... I mean, than just Mike.
And all of this takes place inside one house, at one party, on one night.
So you're probably asking yourself, "How could a movie about one big high school party be of any
enjoyment to me?" And to be honest, I can't really say. Maybe it's Special K (Seth Green), the
wannabe homeboy with a desperate desire to get laid. Or maybe it's William (Charlie Korsmo),
the dorky X-File junky set on paying Mike back for all those times he was tripped in the hallway.
The goofy, and sometimes even childish humor that normally comes off as really stupid somehow
disturbingly hits a cord and keeps you laughing. Hewitt and Embry do a commendable job of holding
it all together, but I still don't get it. All I know is that there's never a dull moment at
the party, and definitely enough love to go around (no pun intedended).
