Top 10 for February 24-26, 2006 Summary: Final numbers are in.
With the Winter Olympics coming to a close this weekend, Tyler Perry's Madea's Family Reunion
crushed the competition in its debut, pulling in a powerful $30.03 million, nearly doubling its next closest competitor.
The followup to Perry's 2005 surprise sleeper hit Diary of a Mad Black Woman ($21.9 million opening, $50.3 million
total), Madea's averaged an incredible $13,787 in 2,194 theaters. Carrying a similarly miniscule $6 million budget,
Lionsgate will be making another hefty profit with this latest Perry production.
Last week's champ, Disney's snow dog pic Eight Below, fell just 22% and a notch to second, pulling in
$15.8 million. Buouyed by strong word of mouth, the Paul Walker starrer (his thriller Running Scared
made its debut this weekend) has brought in a strong $45 million in ten days of release, and seems headed
for $80-85 million domestically.
Steve Martin's $80 million update The Pink Panther fell just 32% to $11.1 million,
bringing its three week cume to $61 million.
In fourth dropping 51% to an estimated $9.2 million was Fox's date flick spoof Date Movie, which brought
its ten day cume to $33.9 million. Budgeted at just $20 million, look for the comedy to bring in a highly profitable $50-55
million domestically. Rounding out the top five was Universal's $50 million animated pic
Curious George with an estimated $7 million, bringing its three week cume to a solid $43.1 million.
The Weinstein Co. failed to duplicate the magic of its low-budget computer animated sleeper hit Hoodwinked
($50.3 million), as its English-made computer animated family pic Doogal whimpered into theaters
with just $3.6 million, averaging a pathetic $1,556 per theater. Paul Walker's thriller remake Running Scared
also disappointed in its debut weekend, as the New Line release managed just $3 million in 1,611 theaters over the three day frame
Despite the huge opening from Madea's Family Reunion, the top ten films were down 4% from last year's comparable frame,
when Tyler Perry's Diary of a Mad Black Woman opened at number one with $21.9 million.
