Published in 2001, Jaime Clarke's first novel "We're So Famous" follows the adventures
(or misadventures as in infamous) of three teen girls seeking fame and fortune
as members of a rock/pop band called "Masterful Johnson." Sadly, I have
not read the book, but have commissioned our own teenage writer Margaret Child
to read it and speak with the author Jaime Clarke. The story as described
has Hollywood written all over it. Check out the eBay auction at: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1548745066
While Margaret reads the novel, Mr. Clarke
was kind enough to answer a few questions by email on Tuesday, July 9th,
2002. I forgot to ask how he came up with the name "Masterful Johnson,"
but maybe after actually reading the novel Margaret will clue us
in.
EI: What made you
decide to auction the rights?
Clarke: I was represented previously by Artists
Management Group and once I realized that they were packaging (I lived in NYC at
the time, so didn't know much about AMG beyond that it was started by Ovitz), I
quit them. This was after being represented by AMG for a year. I
figured the bloom was off the rose with respect to WE'RE SO FAMOUS, and so I did
nothing in terms of the film rights to the book, lamenting the fact that not
everyone had a fair chance at the film rights to the book because of AMG's
packaging policies. This ate away at me for some time, and then my brother
gave me the idea of selling the rights on eBay.
Do you anticipate a bidding war?
Not sure what I'm anticipating, but the reason for selling the
rights on eBay is so that the person running a production out of their
garage has the same shot at buying the rights as DreamWorks does.
Who do you have in mind for the starring
roles?
Obviously the movie is right for three young
actresses. There are so many good ones, I could see any of them in the
roles of Paque, Daisy, and Stella.
What is the opening bid?
The opening bid is $1.
