by Rusty White

The 4th Annual Memphis International Film Festival starts this week in the Bluff City with the Memphis premeire of Ed Soloman’s new film “Levity” starring Morgan Freeman, Billy Bob Thorton, Holly Hunter and Kirsten Dunst. EI’s Stephen Wong was unable to view the film at this years Sundance Festival due to airline problems. Hopefully, I’ll be in line to let you know how it is. MIFF4 runs from March 27 through 30. Opening night of the festival will include a Q&A with Morgan Freeman, Holly Hunter and director Ed Soloman.

The Memphis International Film Festival is sponsored by the Memphis Film Forum. MFF is a non-profit organization which is dedicated to promoting education, cultural diversity and economic development through cinema arts. MMF has been on the vanguard of promoting cultural events in Memphis since its inception in 1998.

In addition to Ed Solomon’s “Levity,” MIFF4 will feature over 50 feature length and short films from all over the world. MIFF4 will also feature an “International Masters” series which will include Jean-Luc Goddard’s classic New Wave film “Breathless,” Alejandro Innaritu’s breakthrough debut “Amores Perros,” the award winning Iranian fairy tale “Gabbeh” and many others.

To honor Memphis born producer/actor Morgan Freeman, MIFF4 will also screen several of his films including “Glory,” “Driving Miss Daisy” and “The Shawshank Redemption.”

MMIF4 will take place at the Malco’s Studio on the Square and the Congo Theater in Memphis’s Cooper-Young district. More information about the festival can be found at the Memphis Film Forum website. There will be several other events in addition to the screenings. Check back for daily reports starting Thursday.
